Ever been typing on your computer with an Ubuntu installation and find the screen go black or that you have been logged out, shutting down all your open applications because you forget and hit the backspace key whilst holding down the Shift key? Major pain.

Wine Sub-Programs

These sub-programs are usually accessible by running ‘wine <wineprogram>’ . With some exceptions, the programs can be also be accessed with just ‘<wineprogram>’ (if Wine was installed in the user’s $PATH), although it is usually safer to use the former invocation.

A complete list of these programs can be found in the source at wine-<version>/programs/

Bush’s Betrayal

Over and over, President Bush confidently promised to “solve problems, not pass them on to future presidents and future generations.” As the clock runs out on his eight-year presidency, a tall stack of troubles remain and Bush’s words ring hollow.

Iraq, budget deficits, the looming insolvency of Social Security and Medicare, high health and energy costs, a national immigration mess — the next president will inherit these problems in January 2009…. Continue Reading »

Adding New True Type Fonts to Linux Ubuntu

In GNOME GUI
Here is a method for doing this via Gnome. In gnome, choose Places | Home Folder from the menu panel (ie open nautilus). When file browser opens, enter “fonts:///” as the Location. Then simply drag the new font into the fonts directory.

Alternately, you can get to the fonts directory by going to System | Preferences | Font. This will bring up a Font Preferences dialog with a Details button. Click “Details…” then click the button “Go to font folder”. Now drag fonts into fonts directory.

Embedding YouTube or Google Videos to WordPress v2 Posts

I had some problems embedding Youtube and Google Video to this site, but eventually worked out a simple solution for both. Paste the following into your editor (ensuring the rich editor is turned off, or alternative temporarily disable javascript if you are using Firefox with the ‘NoScript’ extension)

<embed style=”width: 212px; height: 257px;” id=”VideoPlayback” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” xsrc=”web-address-of-the-video-you-want-to-view” mce_src=”web-address-of-the-video-you-want-to-view” flashvars=”">

That’s it… Simply replace ‘web-address-of-the-video-you-want-to-view’ with either youTube or Google Video url and set the appropriate video dimensions.
